Every citizen/subject needs to know a few things about what the Union costs them in freedom, in happiness, in dignity, in peace of mind and in money! Read it and weep.
We know that the United States spends a lot of money on defense-related matters. How much? Well, the federal budget for Fiscal Year 2008 (October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008) is a whopping $2.35 trillion. As for the military part of the spending, the official website of the Department of Defense cites that its base budget is $459.8 billion. However, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) gives a figure of $481.4 billion, not including a supplemental budget of $141.7 billion for the War on Terror (Iraq and Afghanistan). What’s a few billion here and there among friends? At any rate, the White House boasts that, even without the supplemental for the War on Terror, the Pentagon budget represents a 62% increase over the 2001 budget.
